ODM Secretary-General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna declared that he will not tolerate what he described as political betrayal, telling supporters in Bungoma that leaders must remain firm in defending the interests of the people.
Speaking at a funeral in Bumula Constituency, Bungoma County, Sifuna praised Bumula MP Jack Wamboka, describing him as a principled leader who has consistently stood with wananchi despite political pressure.
Sifuna claimed Wamboka and Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga were among the few leaders from Bungoma who opposed the controversial Finance Bill in Parliament, saying they chose to stand with the public rather than the government.
He said Wamboka's greatest strength is his unwavering political stand, adding that he would never abandon colleagues who remain loyal to their convictions.
Without directly using the word "traitor," Sifuna contrasted Wamboka's loyalty with leaders he accused of lacking principles, saying he could not entrust important political battles to politicians who frequently change positions.
He criticized Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, arguing that leaders who support government policies that hurt citizens should not expect public trust or political reward.
Sifuna alleged that Wamboka was unfairly removed from a parliamentary committee leadership position because of his political association with him and his stance within the opposition.
He further claimed that corruption allegations previously made against Wamboka failed to stand up to scrutiny, saying those who accused the MP could not provide evidence linking him to the claims.
The ODM Secretary-General urged Wamboka to remain steadfast, saying political setbacks are temporary and that voters ultimately decide who holds public office.
Sifuna also dismissed suggestions that removing him from party or parliamentary leadership positions would weaken his political influence, insisting that leadership belongs to the people rather than political elites.
Turning to national politics, Sifuna repeated opposition calls for President William Ruto to leave office, arguing that the administration has failed to address major governance challenges.
He accused the government of failing to stop police violence, citing recent incidents in Nairobi's Mathare area and claiming families continue to lose loved ones during protests.
Sifuna questioned government priorities, arguing that development projects cannot compensate for the loss of lives during security operations.
He also criticized delays in paying teachers and raised concerns over the implementation of the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), claiming county hospitals continue to face financial challenges.
The senator accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of introducing policies that have placed greater economic pressure on ordinary Kenyans, including sugar farmers affected by changes at Nzoia Sugar Company.
Sifuna condemned violence witnessed during the opposition's recent political activities in Kisii County, alleging that supporters were attacked with stones while police officers failed to stop the incident.
He called for investigations into those responsible for the Keumbu confrontation and urged political leaders to compete through policies instead of violence.
Addressing supporters in Western Kenya, Sifuna appealed for peaceful political persuasion, saying leaders should convince people through ideas rather than coercion.
He announced that the Linda Mwananchi movement will hold a major political meeting in the region later this month, where it will outline its future political agenda.
Sifuna concluded by thanking residents of Western Kenya for their continued political support, saying the movement intends to expand its national outreach while maintaining what he described as a firm stand against political betrayal and in support of leaders who remain loyal to their principles.
