Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna received a rousing welcome in Kisii on Friday as the Linda Mwananchi movement held a major public engagement with women and residents in Kitutu Chache South, continuing its nationwide mobilisation campaign ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The self declared ODM Secretary General led a high-profile Linda Mwananchi tour in Kisii and Nyamira counties accompanied by a strong opposition delegation that included Siaya Governor James Orengo, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi, former Chief Justice David Maraga, and Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata, with the leaders jointly addressing residents across multiple stops including Mosocho, Kisii Town, Keumbu and Keroka in a mobilisation drive focused on governance, economic reforms and opposition unity ahead of the incoming elections.

Addressing the gathering, Sifuna introduced himself as "still the Secretary General of ODM, Senator for Nairobi and Deputy Majority Whip in the Senate," telling supporters that he had fulfilled a long-standing promise to visit women in the area after the meeting had been postponed several times.

The senator explained that the event had been delayed on more than one occasion, leaving what he described as "a debt" owed to the women of Kitutu Chache South. He thanked residents for their patience and said the visit was intended to honour that commitment.

During the rally, Sifuna announced financial contributions collected from his friends and political allies for local women's groups. He named several leaders who had donated, including Majimbo Kalasinga, members of the Kisii community in Nairobi led by Penina Nyambega, Bumula MP Jack Wamboka, former ODM National Treasurer Timothy Bosire and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.

Sifuna said he had also added his own contribution, bringing the total amount distributed to women's groups to Sh1 million. "Mimi naongeza nyinyi shilingi 300... yote ikuje shilingi milioni moja kutoka kwangu na marafiki zangu," he told the cheering crowd.

He used the platform to thank Kisii residents for their longstanding support for ODM and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga. "Asanteni sana kwa kusimama na Baba miaka hiyo yote. Asanteni sana kwa kusimama na chama cha ODM miaka hiyo yote," Sifuna said.

The senator reiterated his opposition to President William Ruto's administration, declaring, "Kasongo lazima aende nyumbani 2027." He maintained that his political position was based on governance concerns rather than personal differences, saying the opposition wanted a country governed according to constitutional principles.

Sifuna also criticised the government's handling of recent anti-government protests, referring to the deaths of young people during demonstrations. He said the loss of life could not be justified regardless of development projects being undertaken.

Appealing directly to mothers in attendance, Sifuna asked, "Ukiambiwa urudishiwe mtoto wako ambaye amekufa ama tukujengee hii barabara, utachagua nini?" The crowd responded that they would choose their children, prompting Sifuna to add that "Sisi wa Linda Mwananchi tunaamini maisha ya binadamu yanashinda kila kitu."

The ODM Secretary General further accused the government of sponsoring youth to disrupt opposition meetings, alleging that some had later become victims of violence following disputes over payments. He argued that young people should instead be supported through employment and economic opportunities.

Turning to economic issues, Sifuna said Kenya's high electricity costs were discouraging investment. He argued that manufacturers would be reluctant to establish factories in Kenya when neighbouring countries offered significantly lower energy costs.

He also alleged that corruption remained a major obstacle to investment, claiming that prospective investors often encountered demands for bribes at different levels of government. According to Sifuna, strengthening the rule of law would help improve the country's business environment.

The senator called for equal opportunities for all Kenyans, saying employment and public opportunities should not be determined by ethnicity. He said every Kenyan deserved equal treatment regardless of their community.

Sifuna welcomed former Chief Justice David Maraga for joining the Linda Mwananchi event in Kisii and praised his decision to participate in the movement's activities.

On opposition unity, Sifuna insisted that the Linda Mwananchi movement would not support efforts that could split the opposition vote ahead of the 2027 election. He said dialogue among opposition leaders remained essential.

Referring to former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, Sifuna said that if circumstances required, opposition leaders would sit down together and agree on the strongest candidate capable of defeating President Ruto. He stressed that unity would take precedence over individual ambitions.

Concluding his address, Sifuna urged supporters to back the formation of a single opposition coalition, telling the crowd that a united team would offer the best chance of securing victory in the 2027 General Election while promising that the Linda Mwananchi movement would continue engaging citizens across the country.
