Police in Ruiru have arrested a man after a woman accused him of biting her while they were together at a lodging in Kiambu County, in an incident that has sparked widespread public attention both locally and on social media.
According to reports, the woman had accompanied the suspect to a lodging in Ruiru on Saturday before the alleged attack occurred. Moments later, she reportedly ran out of the room screaming for help, with visible injuries to her lips and mouth. Her cries attracted residents and passers-by who rushed to the scene.
Witnesses said the distressed woman repeatedly told members of the public that the man had bitten her inside the room and pleaded with them not to let him escape. Videos recorded at the scene showed a crowd surrounding the suspect as the woman pointed him out.
Residents restrained the suspect before alerting police officers, who arrived shortly afterwards and took him into custody. He was escorted to a nearby police station as investigations into the incident commenced.
The suspect has since been widely nicknamed the "Ruiru Vampire" on social media because of allegations that he may be linked to a series of biting incidents that have recently been reported in the area. However, police have not officially confirmed any connection between the man and previous cases.
Authorities have also not released the suspect's identity or announced the specific offences he may face. Investigators are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault before making charging decisions.
The complainant is expected to undergo medical examination to document the injuries she sustained, while detectives record statements from witnesses who responded after hearing her screams outside the lodging.
Investigators are also expected to determine whether the suspect has been involved in similar incidents reported by other residents in recent weeks. Any links to previous complaints will form part of the ongoing inquiry.
The incident quickly gained traction online after videos from the scene circulated across social media platforms, prompting widespread discussion and concern among residents over the reported attacks.
Police have urged members of the public with information that could assist the investigation to come forward as detectives continue gathering evidence. The case remains under investigation, and authorities are yet to issue a comprehensive official statement on the matter.
