Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been removed from the Senate Energy Committee following a committee reshuffle approved by the Senate. The changes were communicated to the House by Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot and adopted during the June 17 sitting.
The reshuffle saw Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang' take over Sifuna's position in the influential committee, which oversees matters relating to energy policy, petroleum, electricity, renewable energy and related state agencies.
Garissa Senator Abdul Haji was also moved to the Energy Committee, replacing nominated Senator Beatrice Ogolla. In turn, Ogolla was transferred to the Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Committee, where she filled the vacancy left by Kajwang'.
Sifuna's exit from the committee means he will no longer serve under the committee's chairperson, Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga. The move comes amid growing political differences between the Nairobi senator and sections of the ODM leadership.
In recent months, Sifuna has openly disagreed with some senior ODM figures over the party's cooperation arrangement with President William Ruto's administration. He has also publicly expressed concerns about leadership changes and decision-making within the party.
The Energy Committee is considered one of the most powerful committees in the Senate because of its oversight role over critical sectors that directly affect the economy, including fuel pricing, electricity supply, energy infrastructure and regulation.
During his tenure in the committee, Sifuna was among senators who took a leading role in scrutinising major government projects and energy-related agreements. He was particularly vocal during Senate discussions surrounding the proposed Adani-linked deals involving strategic national infrastructure.
Following the reshuffle, Sifuna remains a member of the Senate County Public Accounts Committee and the National Security, Intelligence and Foreign Relations Committee. However, he was not immediately assigned to another committee to replace his Energy Committee position.
The latest changes are expected to intensify political debate within ODM and the Senate, with observers viewing the reshuffle as part of broader political realignments taking shape ahead of the 2027 General Election.
