Elgeyo Marakwet land slides response teams
Seven more bodies have been recovered from the devastating mudslide in Elgeyo Marakwet County, raising the official death toll to 29, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has confirmed. The latest retrievals were made early Saturday as rescue teams intensified their search operations in the affected villages.
Murkomen, who has been leading government response efforts in the region, said multi-agency teams comprising the Kenya Defence Forces, the Kenya Red Cross, and local volunteers continue to comb through the debris in search of missing persons. Dozens remain unaccounted for following the mudslide that swept through parts of Marakwet East after days of heavy rainfall.
The government has set up temporary shelters for displaced families and dispatched emergency supplies, including food and medical aid, to the area. Murkomen also assured residents that measures are being taken to prevent further loss of life as rains persist across several parts of the Rift Valley.
Local leaders have urged the national government to speed up relocation and rehabilitation plans for residents living in high-risk zones. Meanwhile, rescue operations are expected to continue through the weekend as authorities brace for possible additional rainfall and flooding.
