A devastating road accident claimed the lives of seven people and left 27 others critically injured after a multi-vehicle collision at Salama along the busy Mombasa–Nairobi Highway in Makueni County.
The crash involved a truck, a passenger bus, two private vehicles and a motorcycle in an incident that triggered a large-scale emergency response and brought traffic movement to a standstill along the major transport corridor.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the collision and launched rescue operations to extract victims from the wreckage. Teams worked through the night to provide medical assistance and coordinate evacuation efforts.
The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the fatalities and said dozens of injured survivors were rushed to hospital for urgent treatment. Rescue teams partnered with police officers and local emergency services to manage the situation and secure the area.
Most of the critically injured casualties were taken to Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital, where medical personnel moved quickly to stabilize patients and provide emergency care.
The impact of the crash caused severe damage to the vehicles involved, leaving debris scattered across the highway and forcing temporary traffic disruption as authorities cleared the scene.
Motorists travelling along the route experienced long delays as emergency teams continued recovery operations and police redirected movement around the affected section of the road.
Authorities have not yet announced the exact cause of the accident. Investigators are expected to examine factors including road conditions, vehicle movement and witness accounts to establish what led to the deadly chain collision.
The tragedy once again places attention on road safety concerns along the Mombasa–Nairobi Highway, a critical national route that continues to record major accidents despite repeated calls for tighter enforcement and safer driving practices.
