Seven Kenyans Arrested In South Africa Over Documentation Issues

South African authorities have arrested seven Kenyan nationals working on a U.S.-linked programme in Johannesburg for failing to possess the proper work documentation. The individuals were reportedly on tourist visas, which do not allow for employment, leading to their immediate arrest and initiation of deportation proceedings.
The arrests followed an inspection by the Department of Home Affairs, in collaboration with local law enforcement, after intelligence indicated that the Kenyans were engaged in paid work at a centre processing applications related to a U.S. initiative for refugees. Officials said prior applications to legalise their employment had been denied, yet they continued to work in violation of South African immigration laws.
Authorities confirmed that the seven will face expulsion from the country and a five-year re-entry ban. The operation did not involve any U.S. personnel, and no arrests were made among the programme’s foreign staff. The department stressed that the action was necessary to enforce immigration compliance and uphold legal work standards.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation has engaged with Kenyan and U.S. authorities to manage the diplomatic implications of the arrests. Officials said discussions are ongoing to ensure that the matter is resolved in accordance with international law and bilateral agreements.
Legal experts noted that such incidents highlight the importance of proper documentation for foreign nationals working in South Africa. The case serves as a warning to individuals and organisations operating in the country to strictly adhere to visa and employment regulations to avoid penalties or deportation.
