Senate Mashinani Sittings Begin In Lodwar

The Senate of Kenya, led by Speaker Amason Kingi, arrived in Lodwar on Monday for Senate Mashinani sittings, which will be held in the town this week.

Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai received Speaker Kingi, who paid a courtesy call to the County Headquarters this morning, accompanied by several Senators.

The Governor assured Speaker Kingi of the County Government's commitment to cooperate with and support the Senate as it undertakes its constitutional oversight mandate to protect public resources.

“We all have a mandate to protect public resources. Our team is well-inducted to provide needed support to the Senate as we respect the Constitution of Kenya, which clearly lays out the role of the Senate,” he said.

Speaker Kingi explained that the purpose of the Senate Mashinani sittings is to bring Senate sittings to the grassroots level.

“The Senate belongs to Mashinani, and every year it is our goal to take Senate sittings to the remotest areas of Kenya. Turkana was a good choice,” he said.

He assured the Governor that the Senate would work with counties for the success of devolution.

Speaker Kingi was accompanied by Senators Joyce Korir (nominated), Veronica Maina (nominated), Edwin Sifuna (Nairobi), Enock Wambua (Kitui), and Dan Maanzo (Makueni), as well as other senior officials led by Clerk of the Senate Jeremiah Nyegenye.

The Governor later appeared before the Senate Public Accounts Committee, chaired by Senator Moses Kajwang, to respond to the Auditor General's report for the 2020/2021 financial year.

The Governor was accompanied by senior members of the County Executive.
