Security has been heightened across the country ahead of New Year celebrations, with police deploying officers to major towns, entertainment joints, residential areas and key transport corridors to maintain law and order. The move is aimed at ensuring the safety of revelers as Kenyans usher in the New Year amid increased travel and public gatherings.
Police Inspector-General Douglas Kanja said the National Police Service has rolled out a comprehensive security plan involving uniformed and undercover officers, backed by rapid response units. He noted that security personnel will maintain a visible presence in hotspots, including nightclubs, parks, places of worship and central business districts.
The IG further announced intensified road patrols and traffic enforcement operations on major highways to curb accidents and reckless driving. Motorists were urged to observe traffic rules, avoid drunk driving and cooperate with police officers manning roadblocks and conducting breathalyser tests.
On fireworks, Kanja warned that only licensed operators will be allowed to handle and display fireworks during the festivities. He cautioned that the use of fireworks by unlicensed individuals poses serious risks, including injuries, fires and public panic, and will attract legal action.
Entertainment venue owners and event organizers have been advised to comply with licensing requirements, avoid overcrowding and ensure adequate security within their premises. Police said they will work closely with county authorities and private security firms to enforce safety standards throughout the celebrations.
The Inspector-General appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through emergency hotlines. He emphasized that maintaining peace and security during the New Year celebrations is a shared responsibility between law enforcement agencies and the public.
