Safaricom Launches Chapa Dimba Fourth Edition

Telecommunications Company Safaricom on Friday launched the fourth edition of the Safaricom Chapa Dimba football tournament at Camp Toyoyo, Nairobi County, making a return after a three-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since its inception six years ago, the competition has nurtured and grown football talent at grassroots level from the ages 16-20 years and used the Power of Sports to transform lives of the youth.

During the launch, Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa announced they have committed over sh. 400 million to support the Tournament which is set to run from June 2023 till January 2024.

The support that targets both Boys and Girls will see the total prize money for winners double to sh.20 million, most disciplined team awarded Ksh. 100,000 and Best girl top scorer and Best goal keeper get Ksh. 50,000 each.

“Football connects people naturally and it creates an atmosphere of sociability. In Kenya football is the most penetrated sport touching every corner of the society and as Safaricom we are proud to announce the return of Safaricom Chapa Dimba after a three-year break due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Previous seasons of the tournament have been a huge success, and we intend to enrol even more participants this season. Football is a beautiful game that brings people together. Its popularity cuts across ethnic lines and social status and is a powerful tool for social change, inclusion, and respect,” said Mr Ndegwa.

In a bid to not only nurture football talent but also help in securing good future, Safaricom PLC in Collaboration with Mpesa foundation will offer 150 TVET scholarships for players who will perform well in the Regional, County and National finals.

“We are equally happy to announce that 32 young players from the tournament will be scouted to the national team and get an opportunity to visit Spain for a 10-day training boot camp. In this new season, courtesy of Safaricom and M-PESA Foundations, we shall also offer TVET educational scholarships to 150 players that will go to the best boy and girl player in every county, as well as members of the winning girls’ and boys’ teams at the national finals. We look forward to forging deeper connections with our customers and showcasing our commitment to transforming lives.” Ndegwa added.

The tournament that officially kicks off June 3rd to January 14th 2024, is in partnership with Football Kenya Federation to ensure the tournament meets all the required football standards and also help in grooming future stars for the National team, Harambee Stars.
