President William Ruto has publicly dismissed claims that his government has abandoned boda boda operators and other small-scale traders, reassuring them that their interests are central to his economic agenda.
Speaking at the State House during a meeting with boda boda officials from across the country, the President vowed to work with stakeholders to enact a law that promotes self-regulation to spur the sector's growth.
In a significant move, President Ruto granted amnesty to owners of motorcycles that have been detained at police stations and are not connected to any criminal cases.
He has directed the Ministry of Interior to collaborate with the Inspector-General of Police to ensure these motorcycles are released within the next week.
The President has consistently referred to boda boda riders and "mama mbogas" as the bedrock of his bottom-up economic model. He reiterated that his administration is committed to safeguarding their livelihoods and ensuring that the country's economic growth benefits all Kenyans, not just the elite.
