President William Ruto hosted South Sudan Presidential Special Envoy Tut Gatluak Manime at State House, Nairobi, in a high-level diplomatic engagement focused on advancing peace, stability, and regional cooperation. The meeting, held on January 28, 2026, also brought together South Sudan’s Foreign and International Cooperation Minister Monday Semaya Kumba and Tumaini Initiative Chief Mediator Lazarus Sumbeiywo.
The discussions centered on Kenya’s ongoing role in supporting peace processes in South Sudan, particularly through the Tumaini Initiative, a Kenyan-mediated dialogue aimed at resolving conflicts between the government in Juba and hold-out groups. President Ruto reiterated Kenya’s commitment to fostering stability in the region.
President Ruto highlighted the importance of credible and peaceful elections in South Sudan this year, emphasising that robust institutions are essential to democratic consolidation. He pledged Kenya’s support in capacity building for electoral bodies to ensure transparent and inclusive processes.
Envoy Manime conveyed a special message from South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit, underlining Juba’s appreciation for Kenya’s mediation and continued engagement on security and political matters. He noted that Nairobi’s efforts had strengthened trust between the negotiating parties.
Lazarus Sumbeiywo, chief mediator of the Tumaini Initiative, briefed the delegation on the progress of ongoing talks, which aim to bring hold-out groups into the political process and reduce tensions ahead of upcoming elections. He described Kenya’s facilitation as critical to sustaining momentum.
Foreign Minister Monday Semaya Kumba acknowledged Kenya’s role as a key partner in peace and regional stability, highlighting collaboration on both political and security fronts. She emphasised that Kenya’s involvement demonstrates the importance of regional solidarity in resolving complex conflicts.
The Nairobi talks also focused on economic and infrastructural cooperation, with President Ruto and South Sudanese officials exploring ways to strengthen trade, investment, and cross-border collaboration as a pathway to long-term stability.
Kenya’s diplomatic engagement reflects a broader strategy of regional integration and conflict resolution, positioning Nairobi as a hub for mediation and support for democratic transitions in East Africa. Ruto noted that strong regional ties are vital for economic growth and security.
The President underscored that Kenya remains committed to supporting South Sudan’s peace and development agenda, and pledged continued technical and logistical assistance to ensure that the electoral process proceeds smoothly and peacefully.
The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to sustain dialogue and cooperation, with both sides agreeing that regional stability, credible elections, and inclusive governance are priorities. Observers say Kenya’s proactive role is likely to influence the success of the Tumaini peace process and the broader political transition in South Sudan.
