Report Ethical"; Mck Warns Journalists Ahead Of Gen Z Protests Anniversary

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has called on journalists to uphold ethical reporting as the nation marks the anniversary of the June 25 Gen Z protests.
In a media advisory, MCK urged reporters to remain professional and cautious, especially when covering emotionally charged events.
“The media should follow the ‘do no harm’ principle, treating subjects, colleagues, and audiences with respect and avoiding unnecessary harm to society and vulnerable groups through their reporting,” the council stated.
Journalists were cautioned against sensationalizing the protests. The council warned against glorifying violence or using coverage that may retraumatize the public.
“The section of the Code on Accuracy and Fairness stipulates that all subjects of news coverage must be treated with respect and dignity,” the advisory noted.
MCK expressed concern over recent incidents where journalists were assaulted during past demonstrations. The council regretted such attacks and urged police officers to exercise restraint. The Council reminded all parties that journalists are messengers, not enemies.
