At least 84 suspected criminals have been arrested in an ongoing security operation across Nairobi targeting organised gangs linked to violence and street crime.

Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud confirmed the arrests, saying the multi-agency crackdown has also led to the impoundment of 194 motorbikes believed to have been used in criminal activities within the city.

The operation, according to police, is intelligence-led and has been sustained over several weeks, focusing on dismantling coordinated networks often blamed for robberies, attacks, and disruption during public gatherings.

Authorities say many of the suspects are part of loosely organised groups commonly referred to as “goons”, who have previously been linked to incidents of violence, especially during protests and political events in the capital.

Police noted that motorbikes have increasingly been used to mobilise and transport suspects, enabling quick movement across different parts of Nairobi during criminal operations.

Similar past crackdowns have seen arrests of individuals accused of orchestrating or participating in coordinated violence, with security agencies relying heavily on surveillance and public tip-offs.

Issa Mohamud stated that patrols have been intensified in identified hotspots, with officers working to pre-empt attacks and restore order amid rising concerns over urban insecurity.

The impounded motorbikes are being held at various police stations pending verification and legal processing, with owners required to provide documentation before release, in line with existing enforcement practices.

Security agencies have reiterated their commitment to sustaining the operations, warning that individuals involved in organised crime will face arrest and prosecution.

The crackdown comes amid heightened vigilance in Nairobi following repeated reports of gang-related violence and theft in the city.
