Huruma estate protests as residents engage police over the fatal shooting of 21 years old Sheryl Adhiambo

Huruma Estate in Nairobi was thrown into chaos after a 21-year-old Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student, Sheryl Adhiambo, was fatally shot on Saturday night. Locals say she was struck by a stray bullet while police were pursuing a suspected thief in the Huruma Ngei I area. Sheryl had just completed her exams and was reportedly helping her mother at a fish stall when the shooting occurred.

The student’s death immediately sparked outrage among residents, with youths taking to the streets to protest. Demonstrators blocked major roads, demanding accountability and justice over the fatal shooting.

As tensions escalated, protesters set fire to cars and parts of the local police station, causing significant property damage. Witnesses said at least three vehicles were burnt, highlighting the severity of the unrest.

In addition to vehicles, protestors torched buses and several business stalls, disrupting daily activities in the densely populated estate. Local traders reported losses as looters took advantage of the chaos to ransack shops.

Security forces were deployed to the area to contain the unrest, with officers firing warning shots in the air to disperse the crowds. The intervention allowed authorities to safely remove Sheryl’s body from the scene for transport to the mortuary.

Police have confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing. At this stage, the identity of the officer involved, if any, and the exact sequence of events remain under inquiry.

Local patrols remained in place on Sunday as the estate tried to regain normalcy. Residents continued to call for justice and accountability, warning that further violence could erupt if their demands are not addressed.

The tragic incident has reignited debate over the safety of civilians in high-risk areas and the use of force by police during criminal pursuits. Authorities are urging calm while promising a thorough investigation into the fatal shooting.
