President William Ruto has instructed the National Police Service (NPS) to act immediately to safeguard the North Eastern region after the abduction of five chiefs by suspected Al-Shabaab militants.

“I have directed the National Police Service to initiate an operation to deal with the criminal elements operating in this part of the country,” he announced.

Speaking in Mandera on Tuesday, President Ruto reassured locals that the government is unwavering in its efforts to combat criminal groups and terrorism in the region.

The Head of State stressed that his government would not give extremists any portion of its territory and pledged a persistent crackdown on terrorist activities.

He described the abduction as a desperate attempt by terrorists to instill fear among the local population.

In highlighting the government's counterterrorism initiatives, he pointed out that Al-Shabaab's ability to operate in Northern Kenya has been severely undermined.
Ruto announced that he will spend the night in Mandera, defying the militants' attempts to impede his visit.
