President Ruto In Egypt For COP27 Summit

President William Ruto on Sunday traveled to Cairo, Egypt for the United Nations Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP 27).

The Head of state who is the chairperson of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change led the Kenyan delegation to the ongoing conference at Sharm el-Sheikh City.

According to the State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed, President Ruto will deliver the Kenyan national statement and a statement on behalf of Africa.

With the current climatic changes in Africa, President Ruto is expected to champion for the betterment of the situation across communities.

The Commander-in-Chief is also expected to lay out mitigation plans for the country in dealing with the current situation which will help avert global warming.

The Summit, which brings together more than 130 Heads of State from around the globe, comes at a time when Africa is facing weather extremes coupled with energy and food crises.

Kenya is also experiencing the worst drought in 40 years as a result of the effects of climate change.

According to a report published by UN Climate Change ahead of COP27, efforts remain insufficient to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century despite countries bending the curve of global greenhouse gas emissions downward.

Since COP26 in Glasgow, only 29 out of 194 countries came forward with tightened national plans.

The 27th Conference of Parties on Climate Change was officially opened by the COP 27 President and Egypt’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sameh Shoukry, on Sunday.

Council of Governors (CoG) Chairperson Anne Waiguru and Embu Governor Cecile Mbarire, Environment CS Soipan Tuya, Energy CS Davis Chirchir, and Foreign Affairs CS Alfred Mutua are part of the delegation accompanying the President.
