Following the demise of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, President William Ruto has declared a seven-day period of national mourning.
In a solemn national address delivered from the State House, the President confirmed that Mr. Odinga, who died earlier today in Kochi, India, will be accorded a State Funeral with full honors in recognition of his decades-long service to the nation.
To honor the late opposition leader, the President announced that the national flag will fly at half-mast across the country and at all Kenyan missions abroad throughout the mourning period.
President Ruto immediately announced the formation of a high-level funeral committee to coordinate all arrangements in consultation with the Odinga family. The committee will be co-chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga.
Furthermore, the Government of India has offered to facilitate the repatriation of Mr. Odinga’s remains following a request from the Kenyan government.
A high-level delegation, led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, has already departed for India to oversee the process.
President Ruto concluded his address by paying a glowing tribute to Raila’s enduring legacy, describing him as a "once-in-a-generation leader whose ideals transcended politics."
