President William Samoei Ruto has congratulated Uganda’s presidential elect, Yoweri Museveni, following the conclusion of the country’s 2026 general elections. Museveni was declared the winner by Uganda’s Electoral Commission, extending his rule into a seventh term.
Ruto’s statement praised Museveni for the victory and highlighted the trust Ugandans placed in their leader. He commended the peaceful conduct of the election process, despite reports of tensions in parts of the country.
The announcement comes amid serious allegations by the main opposition leader, Bobi Wine, who rejected the official results. Wine claims the election was marred by irregularities, including intimidation and ballot manipulation.
Observers also reported an internet shutdown during the voting period, failures in some biometric systems, and harassment of opposition supporters. Security forces clamped down on protests and opposition activities in several districts.
Museveni officially secured approximately 71.6 percent of the vote, according to the Electoral Commission. The result cements his long-standing rule since 1986, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.
Ruto’s message emphasized the importance of continued Kenya-Uganda cooperation. He noted that strong bilateral relations are key for regional stability and shared socio-economic development.
The African Union also issued a statement congratulating Museveni on his re-election. The AU praised Uganda’s “democratic maturity,” though some observers questioned the fairness of the process.
Political analysts suggest Ruto’s public congratulations signal Kenya’s intent to maintain diplomatic ties, even amid controversy surrounding Uganda’s election. The statement reflects a preference for stability over confrontation in regional politics.
Despite the congratulatory note, scrutiny of Uganda’s election continues. Opposition groups, civil society, and some international observers are calling for independent verification of the voting process.
