The Orange Democratic Movement has unveiled a newly ratified leadership lineup following a decisive Special Delegates Conference, marking a significant shift in the party’s internal structure and signalling a new phase of reorganisation.

The high-level meeting, held at Jamhuri Grounds, brought together delegates from across the country to deliberate on leadership changes, party unity, and future political strategy.

At the centre of the reorganisation is Oburu Odinga, who was officially confirmed as the party leader after previously serving in an acting capacity, solidifying his authority within ODM ranks.

His ratification comes after a transitional period that followed the death of longtime party leader Raila Odinga, an event that created a leadership vacuum and triggered intense internal consultations.

In the new leadership structure, Abdulswamad Nassir and Simba Arati were appointed as deputy party leaders, reflecting efforts to balance regional representation and strengthen grassroots influence.

The two governors are expected to play a critical role in mobilising support and reinforcing ODM’s presence in key political strongholds across the Coast and Western regions.

However, the reshuffle also saw Godfrey Osotsi edged out of the deputy party leader position after failing to secure the necessary backing during the ratification process.

His removal underscored underlying internal dynamics and shifting alliances within the party, as factions competed for influence in the new order.

Meanwhile, Gladys Wanga was confirmed as the National Chairperson, placing her at the centre of ODM’s administrative and strategic leadership.

She will be deputised by Otiende Amollo and John Ariko Namoit, both of whom were ratified as deputy chairpersons during the conference.

The convention also reaffirmed the position of Edwin Sifuna as Secretary General, despite recent internal tensions that had raised questions about his standing within the party.

Delegates used the forum to call for unity and discipline, urging leaders to close ranks and focus on rebuilding the party following months of internal disagreements and public disputes.

The reorganisation is widely seen as a strategic attempt to stabilise ODM and restore cohesion after a period marked by factional divisions and leadership uncertainty.

Political analysts note that the inclusion of younger leaders and regional figures signals a deliberate effort to rejuvenate the party and broaden its national appeal.

ODM leaders emphasised the need to strengthen grassroots structures, improve party coordination, and enhance engagement with supporters across all counties.

With the new leadership now in place, the party is expected to reposition itself within Kenya’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The latest changes mark a critical moment for ODM as it seeks to maintain relevance, consolidate its support base, and redefine its role within the country’s opposition politics.
