President William Samoei Ruto has today commissioned the 132kV Lessos–Kabarnet Transmission Line Project in Baringo County, marking a major milestone in the expansion of electricity infrastructure in the Rift Valley region. The project is aimed at strengthening power supply and improving grid stability in Baringo and neighbouring counties.
The Sh1.5 billion investment will be fully integrated into the national grid, supplying reliable, affordable and stable electricity to thousands of households and businesses in Baringo and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties. The new high-voltage line replaces overstretched infrastructure, significantly reducing outages and improving the quality of power supply.
Government officials said the project will play a critical role in enhancing the delivery of essential services, including healthcare, education and water supply, many of which depend on consistent electricity to operate efficiently. The improved power supply is expected to lower operational costs and boost service delivery across the region.
The transmission line is also expected to stimulate economic activity by attracting investment and accelerating job creation for young people, particularly in small and medium-sized enterprises, agro-processing and other productive sectors that rely on dependable electricity.
President Ruto noted that the project underscores the government’s commitment to expanding energy access as a driver of inclusive growth, saying reliable power is key to unlocking economic potential and supporting long-term development in the Rift Valley and beyond.
