President William Ruto has stated that the United Nations organization could become irrelevant unless it undertakes urgent, comprehensive reforms that align with current global realities.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, President Ruto urged the institution to reform and become "fit-for-purpose."
He emphasized the need for reforms to the organization and a re-alignment of its mandate and decisions with current global dynamics, rather than the geopolitical order of 1945. "Institutions rarely fail because they lack vision or ideals; more often, they drift into irrelevance when they do not adapt," President Ruto said.
He pointed to the exclusion of Africa from permanent representation on the UN Security Council as a "glaring injustice" that undermines the body's credibility. He argued that reforming the Security Council is not a favor to Africa but a necessity for the UN's survival.
On the issue of global finance, President Ruto criticized the current system, calling it punitive to developing nations while rewarding the wealthy. He urged for sweeping reforms and the unlocking of a promised $300 billion in climate finance, a pledge made at the UN Climate Conference in Baku.
"Without affordable finance and reform of the international financial architecture, the promise of climate action in Africa will remain constrained," he warned.
The President also addressed ongoing conflicts, calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the unconditional release of Israeli hostages, and a credible political process toward a two-state solution.
He also highlighted Kenya's leadership role in the multinational security mission in Haiti, reporting significant progress in restoring order, but cautioned that the mission remains underfunded.
President Ruto concluded by emphasizing Africa's role as a proactive leader in climate action, stating that "climate change is the greatest threat of our age, but also one of the greatest opportunities." He affirmed that Kenya and the continent are taking bold steps to demonstrate how climate action can be the foundation for inclusive growth.
