Power Passes To Khamenei’s Son As Iran Shows Unity

Mojtaba Khamenei the son of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has now been named the new Supreme Leader of Iran.

Thousands of supporters gathered in central Tehran on Monday, filling Enghelab Square in a mass rally to pledge allegiance to Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, following the death of his father in military strikes linked to the ongoing regional conflict. The square, one of the most symbolic political locations in the Iranian capital, has historically hosted major pro-government demonstrations and national events.

The gathering came shortly after Iran’s powerful clerical body, the Assembly of Experts, formally appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new supreme leader. The decision followed the killing of his father, Ali Khamenei, who had led the Islamic Republic since 1989 and was one of the longest-serving political leaders in the Middle East.

Ali Khamenei reportedly died in late February during coordinated airstrikes on Tehran carried out amid escalating hostilities between Iran and its regional adversaries. The strikes targeted several security and leadership sites in the capital as tensions between Iran, Israel and the United States intensified.

Following the announcement of the new leadership, senior state officials, military commanders and influential clerics quickly moved to declare loyalty to Mojtaba Khamenei. Iran’s powerful security institutions, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, publicly signaled support for the transition.

Mojtaba Khamenei, a cleric in his mid-50s, has long been considered one of the most influential figures within Iran’s political system despite not previously holding a prominent elected position. For years he operated behind the scenes within his father’s office, maintaining strong links with religious networks and security structures.

His elevation marks an unprecedented moment in the history of the Islamic Republic, as it is the first time leadership has effectively passed from father to son since the 1979 revolution that established Iran’s clerical system of governance.

The leadership transition comes at a time of heightened regional tensions and military confrontation across the Middle East. Iran has exchanged missile and drone attacks with its rivals while warning that it will not back down in the widening conflict.

In Tehran, the rally at Enghelab Square was portrayed by authorities as a show of national unity and resistance. Demonstrators waved Iranian flags, carried portraits of the late Ali Khamenei and chanted slogans pledging loyalty to Mojtaba Khamenei as the country enters a new and uncertain chapter of leadership.
