Parliament has pledged to support and empower persons with disabilities (PWDs) across the country.

This is according to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula who spoke during a meeting with Kenya Disability and Parliamentary Association (KEDIPA) and PWD Members of Parliament from both Houses.

According to a news report by The Star, KEDIPA led by Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to guaranteeing that PWDs have a say in the Kenyan Parliament.

They pledged to support holistic participation of PWDs, guaranteeing just opportunities, and actively confronting discrimination against them.

Wetang’ula underscored the significance of increasing public awareness about disabilities in order to create a more inclusive society.

He said that the focus should not be limited to urban centers, but should also include remote areas like Turkana and Mandera.

The speaker vowed that the parliament will repeal the Persons With Disabilities Act of 2003 and give priority to the Persons With Disabilities Act of 2023.

Wetang’ula assured of his resolute support for KEDIPA in creating awareness and fostering impactful change within the disability sector.

“I will support KEDIPA in creating awareness and impact in the disability sector to change the narrative in Africa where some people are ashamed of their kin if they are differently abled, yet it can happen to anyone. The human spirit in a person should never be suppressed by any condition,” said the Speaker.
