National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula on Saturday used a boda boda empowerment programme in Luanda, Vihiga County, to praise Khwisero MP Christopher Aseka’s leadership, defend the broad-based government arrangement and rally support around development and future political cooperation.

Opening his remarks, Wetang’ula singled out Aseka for recognition, describing him as a leader whose performance had distinguished him from previous office holders in the constituency.

“Kule Tanzania wanasema… ukiweka mtu kama Aseka, unasema kazi imepata mtu.”

The Speaker told residents that Khwisero voters had rewarded visible development by electing Aseka for a second term, contrasting his record with previous leaders who failed to secure renewed mandates.

“Hii constituency yenu tangu ianze… huyu Aseka ndio wa kwanza kupigiwa kura mara mbili.”

Wetang’ula argued that performance and delivery had earned Aseka public confidence and said development should remain the key measure for leadership evaluation.

“Aseka homework alifanya, maendeleo amefanya, mtihani amepita.”

Shifting to national politics, Wetang’ula defended the decision by leaders associated with the broad-based government arrangement to work with the administration, saying the move was based on political foresight rather than short-term interests.

“Chinua Achebe alisema… mtu mwerevu akisimama hapa chini ataona mbali kuliko mjinga aliye juu ya mti.”

The Speaker praised opposition leader Raila Odinga’s role in supporting cooperation across political lines and said national interest had taken precedence over political rivalry.

“Hii nchi yetu ni kubwa kuliko mtu binafsi. Tukutane tuketi tufanye broad government.”

He linked the political arrangement to opportunities for development and said communities represented by leaders elected through ODM should also benefit from government programmes.

“Hapa huyu Aseka mlimchagua kwa ODM, lakini Raila aliwaleta akawaingiza kwa serikali.”

Turning to infrastructure, Wetang’ula highlighted ongoing and planned projects across Western Kenya, saying investments in health, sports and transport were intended to transform the region’s economic potential.

“Kakamega Stadium inajengwa, Level 6 Hospital inajengwa… tukalaunch hospitali.”

He pointed to additional projects including stadiums, airport expansion and road and transport infrastructure, arguing that the region was entering a new phase of public investment.

“Busia Stadium inajengwa… Kakamega kiwanja cha ndege cha kimataifa kinajengwa.”

The Speaker also spoke about the Standard Gauge Railway extension, saying improved connectivity would reduce travel time and lower transport costs for residents moving between Western Kenya and Nairobi.

“Bungoma mpaka Malaba SGR… ukiingia SGR, ni masaa manne uko Nairobi.”

Looking ahead politically, Wetang’ula called for long-term regional cooperation and invoked previous political transitions, arguing that communities should support one another across successive leadership cycles.

“Tukasukuma gurudumu la Mzee Kenyatta… tukasukuma gurudumu la Raila.”

He further urged communities in Western Kenya and neighbouring regions to remain united and continue supporting President William Ruto’s administration while keeping future political negotiations open.

“Tunakusukumia term one, tunakupa term two… ikifika wakati wetu usisimame nyuma yetu.”

Closing his address, Wetang’ula encouraged residents to obtain national identity cards and register as voters, saying documentation remains the first step toward political participation and exercising democratic rights.

“Silaha ya kwanza ya kura ni kwa kitambulisho chako.”
