National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has clarified that the much-talked-about “Singapore dream” should not be interpreted as a literal aspiration to travel abroad, but rather as a vision for transforming lives within Kenya.
Speaking during a recent public engagement, Wetang’ula stated, “To me, the ‘Singapore dream’ is not about a journey to the land of Singapore,” pushing back against what he suggested was a growing misconception around the phrase.
He explained that the concept instead reflects the need for meaningful development at home, adding, “…it is about improving our lives through better roads, access to water, quality healthcare, and peaceful coexistence.”
The Speaker emphasized that the vision draws inspiration from Singapore’s transformation, but must be adapted to suit Kenya’s unique social, economic, and political realities rather than copied blindly.
Wetang’ula further noted that achieving such a dream requires long-term commitment, discipline, and unity among citizens, cautioning against quick-fix expectations in the country’s development journey.
His remarks come at a time when political leaders increasingly invoke Singapore as a benchmark for efficiency, urban planning, and economic progress, especially in conversations around Kenya’s future growth trajectory.
The Speaker urged leaders and citizens alike to focus on practical solutions that directly improve livelihoods, stressing that true progress will be measured not by comparisons abroad but by tangible improvements in the daily lives of Kenyans.
