Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi used the commissioning of a new swimming pool at Ngeria Girls Secondary School to call on students across the country to protect school infrastructure and reject destructive behaviour. Addressing students, teachers, religious leaders and parents, Sudi said educational institutions should be centres of excellence and opportunity rather than scenes of unrest and destruction.
“Today we have come to launch this swimming pool. When I first came here, I promised that we would build a swimming pool and even some people, including those within the school, were not certain it would happen. Now it is complete. After this one, I will move to other schools and construct more swimming pools because we want our students to have different opportunities. Some will play football, others will swim. We want children from humble backgrounds to enjoy the same facilities that are available to children from wealthy families.”
The legislator said the swimming pool project forms part of a broader plan to improve learning infrastructure in schools across Kapseret Constituency. He noted that additional projects including libraries, gates, classrooms and other facilities are planned as part of efforts to elevate local schools to higher standards.
“This will not be the first and last project in this school. We have come a long way together over the years and I want to assure you that we will continue investing here. We shall build the gate, improve the appearance of the school and construct the facilities that students have requested. We want this institution to grow into a school that can compete with the best. Development is a process and we are determined to continue improving the learning environment for these students.”
Sudi also pledged support for the completion of a church building used by students, arguing that education and spiritual development should go hand in hand. He instructed contractors present at the event to ensure the church and other unfinished projects receive attention.
“Because many students worship there, we shall complete that church. We shall finish the gate and ensure the entire school environment looks good. I have instructed the contractor to look at the remaining work and complete it. When students have a good school and a good place of worship, they are guided both academically and spiritually. That is important because we want them to grow into responsible and disciplined citizens.”
The MP highlighted ongoing education projects across the constituency, revealing that hundreds of millions of shillings are being invested in school infrastructure. According to him, the goal is to create a network of modern schools capable of offering quality education close to home.
“We want this school to become one of the best in Kapseret. In Wareng there are major projects already underway, and in Kimalel another secondary school project is progressing. Over the next five years, we want students to move confidently between our schools because all of them will have quality facilities. We are investing heavily because education remains the strongest foundation for the future of our children and the development of our community.”
Turning to student welfare, Sudi encouraged learners to remain focused on their studies and avoid distractions that could undermine their future ambitions. He emphasized the importance of discipline, hard work and patience.
“Study hard and remain focused. There is time for everything in life. Complete your education, get employment and establish yourself before thinking about relationships. Opportunities are available for young people who work hard. Do not allow temporary distractions to interfere with your long-term goals. If you remain disciplined and committed to your education, you will be able to achieve things that may seem impossible today.”
A significant portion of his speech focused on the growing problem of school unrest and arson attacks. Sudi warned students against destroying facilities that have been built through years of sacrifice by parents, teachers, leaders and taxpayers.
“Discipline starts at home and continues in school. If you have a problem with a teacher, ask questions and seek guidance. If the issue persists, speak to your parents, a pastor, a bishop or another trusted adult. But the solution is never to destroy property. We have built this school, constructed facilities and invested resources so that you can have a better future. Burning schools and destroying infrastructure is not a solution; it only hurts fellow students and damages opportunities that others worked hard to create.”
The MP described acts of arson as dangerous and self-defeating, saying students who engage in such behaviour ultimately harm themselves and their peers. He urged learners to embrace peaceful methods of resolving grievances.
“You cannot spend years building a school and then destroy it in a single night because of anger or influence from others. That is not wisdom. Those are destructive ideas that do not help anyone. We want students who solve problems through dialogue and respect. When you protect your school, you are protecting your future, your classmates and the generations that will come after you. Let us reject violence and destruction completely.”
Sudi further encouraged students to cultivate spiritual values and maintain a habit of prayer. He said faith can help learners remain focused, disciplined and respectful toward others.
“Pray for your studies, pray for your parents and pray for our country. Even when there is no organized prayer session, take time to speak to God. Faith helps people remain grounded and disciplined. We want students who respect their teachers, respect their parents and respect one another. Such values create a peaceful environment where learning can flourish and where young people can achieve their dreams.”
The MP said his vision is to make Kapseret one of the leading constituencies in educational development and student achievement. He urged all stakeholders to work together in maintaining order and protecting investments made in schools.
“We want Kapseret to be the best. We do not want to hear of crime, destruction or schools being affected by unrest. Let us set high standards and become an example to others. Development alone is not enough; we must also protect what we build. If students, parents, teachers and leaders work together, our schools will continue to grow and our children will have every opportunity to succeed.”
Leaders who spoke after Sudi praised the swimming pool project and described it as a rare investment that will benefit generations of students. They urged learners to become their sisters’ keepers and ensure that the facility remains protected and properly maintained.
“This swimming pool is not something you find in many schools. Building it required vision, resources and commitment. It is now the responsibility of students, teachers and school managers to take care of it. If you love your fellow students, you cannot harm them or destroy facilities meant for everyone. Protect what has been built and ensure future generations benefit from the same opportunities.”
The event also saw local leaders request additional projects including empowerment programs, water infrastructure and educational facilities in underserved areas of Ngeria. Sudi responded by promising to continue considering development requests from residents.
“The people of this area have consistently supported development and continue to bring forward ideas that can improve lives. We shall continue listening to them and implementing projects where possible. Development is not a one-day event. It is a continuous process that requires cooperation between leaders and the community. Our goal remains to improve education, create opportunities and ensure that no part of this constituency is left behind.”
As the ceremony concluded, Sudi reiterated that protecting schools should be a collective responsibility. He urged students to embrace discipline, reject arson and dedicate themselves to academic excellence.
“Let us move forward together. Let us build schools instead of destroying them. Let us encourage one another to succeed instead of leading one another into trouble. The future of this country depends on educated, disciplined and responsible young people. That is why we must protect our schools, respect our teachers and remain focused on our goals.”
