As the general elections draw nearer, the formal structure and legal mechanisms governing Kenya's political organizations become increasingly critical.

Understanding how political parties are registered, their true mandate, and the role they play in shaping the nation's future is vital, especially as contenders rush to affiliate themselves for the upcoming polls.

To illuminate this crucial process, the Signs TV Breakfast Show hosted a special segment featuring Locha Erukudi, Assistant Director ,Office of Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP), who discussed the legal frameworks and operational dynamics defining the country's political landscape.

Mr. Erukudi clarified the legal definition and function of these associations, citing the foundation of the law: "The Political Parties Act defines a political party as an association with a unique ideology, and its primary function is to nominate candidates for purposes of elections."

This definition underscores that parties are meant to represent distinct ideologies and serve as the essential vehicle through which individuals gain candidacy for electoral contests.

The ORPP plays a critical oversight role in ensuring political parties adhere to the law. Mr. Erukudi explained that his department is tasked with comprehensively monitoring all political party activities, ranging from the initial registration process to enforcing the established code of conduct.

This strict monitoring ensures that parties operate transparently and within the legal parameters designed to maintain the integrity of Kenya’s democratic system.

As the election clock ticks, the ORPP’s role in regulating affiliation and nomination processes will become central to the political discourse.
