The battle for the Ol Kalou parliamentary seat in Nyandarua County has entered a critical stage as political parties intensify campaigns ahead of the by-election scheduled for July 16, 2026. The contest has attracted national attention, with government-aligned leaders highlighting development projects while opposition figures focus on accountability, governance and citizen participation.
The seat fell vacant following the death of former Ol Kalou MP David Njuguna Kiaraho, triggering the electoral process. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) later cleared nine candidates to contest the seat, paving the way for campaigns ahead of the mini-poll.
The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has fielded Sammy Kamau Ngotho as its candidate. Ngotho secured the party ticket after winning the DCP nominations and has received backing from senior party officials, including Nyandarua Senator John Methu, who has been leading grassroots mobilisation efforts in support of the party’s candidate.
DCP campaigns have largely centred on calls for accountability, better representation and increased public participation in governance. Party leaders have urged residents to look beyond development projects and examine issues such as leadership performance, transparency and the management of public resources.
On the government side, leaders have focused on development achievements and service delivery as they seek to win support from voters. The campaigns have highlighted infrastructure improvements, including road projects, electricity connectivity, access to government programmes and other initiatives aimed at improving residents’ livelihoods.
Government supporters have argued that continued investment in infrastructure and social programmes demonstrates commitment to the people of Ol Kalou and Nyandarua County. They have urged voters to support leaders who can sustain development and ensure completion of ongoing projects.
The opposition, however, has maintained that development must be accompanied by accountability and effective representation. Leaders campaigning for DCP have challenged voters to demand transparency from elected leaders and ensure public resources are used for the benefit of citizens.
The contest has also attracted interest because of its timing ahead of the 2027 General Election. Political parties are using the by-election as a measure of their grassroots strength and popularity in the region.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has also mounted a strong campaign, presenting its candidate Samuel Muchina Nyaga after the party nomination exercise. Other political parties have also joined the race, making the Ol Kalou contest highly competitive.
Political analysts have described the by-election as a test of whether voters will prioritise government development records or opposition calls for accountability and political change. The outcome is expected to influence political strategies in Nyandarua and beyond as parties prepare for the 2027 polls.
As campaigns continue, the IEBC has urged candidates and supporters to maintain peace, respect electoral rules and allow residents to make their choices freely. Voters in Ol Kalou will ultimately determine the direction of leadership in the constituency when they cast their ballots on July 16, 2026.
