Hit Squad captain Nick Okoth is contented with the silver medal he secured in the Africa Boxing Confederation Championship held in Maputo, Mozambique over the weekend.

Okoth eliminated Algeria’s Walid Tarzout in the second round after dislocating his shoulder but lost his African lightweight title to Zambia’s Chilata Andrew on split decision.

“This was my third time participating in the African championship and I’m very grateful to have this opportunity. I won two gold medals in my previous encounters and now I got a silver medal. I wanted gold for the third time but I’m still thankful for the achievement,” said Okoth.

Elizabeth Andiego, Samuel Njau and Nick Okoth all settled for silver after losing their respective bouts in the finals of the competition.

Andiego showed potential of clinching gold after defeating her South African opponent Muriel Mkateko Sithole in the heavyweight semis, but fell to Moroccan Mardi Khadija in the finals.

Africa Zone III champion Njau lost to Mozambican Sigauque Moz on split decision in the men’s Featherweight final.

The three Kenyans walked away with Sh. 600 thousand for finishing second with the winners getting Sh. 1.2 million.

Kenya finished 12th overall, while hosts Mozambique won the overall title with five gold and two bronze.
