The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has ordered an immediate investigation into the collapse of a multi-storey building in South C, Nairobi, directing police to fast-track inquiries into the incident.
In a statement, Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga instructed the Inspector General of Police to commence or expedite investigations and submit a comprehensive inquiry file to the ODPP within seven days.
Police have been directed to record statements from all persons of interest, including the developer and the contractor involved in the project, as well as any other individuals linked to the construction and approval process.
The ODPP said the probe will also extend to public officers responsible for building approvals, inspections and enforcement, warning that any dereliction of duty will attract accountability.
The building collapsed in the early hours of January 2, triggering an emergency response by multi-agency rescue teams as residents and workers scrambled for safety.
At least one body has been recovered from the rubble, with authorities indicating that search and rescue operations were still ongoing as investigators began preliminary assessments.
The National Construction Authority (NCA) has since revealed that the structure was non-compliant with approved plans at the time of collapse, raising concerns over regulatory oversight.
Officials said the building had previously been flagged for violations, with enforcement notices issued before the incident, though construction allegedly continued.
The ODPP said findings from the investigation will guide further action, including possible criminal charges, as the government comes under pressure to crack down on unsafe construction practices.
