The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has signalled it is seeking fresh political terms with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and President William Samoei Ruto, amid ongoing realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election. Party leaders say any continued cooperation must be anchored on clearly defined and mutually agreed conditions.
ODM officials argue that past political engagements lacked formal structures, leaving room for misunderstandings and uneven power-sharing. The party now wants any future working relationship with UDA to be guided by a written framework that outlines roles, expectations and policy priorities.
National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed said ODM’s support cannot be taken for granted, noting that the party commands significant influence both in Parliament and at the grassroots. He stressed that ODM will only engage in structured negotiations that protect its political identity and interests.
Other ODM leaders have echoed the call, insisting the party must avoid informal arrangements and instead pursue agreements that deliver tangible benefits to its supporters. They say the talks should focus on governance reforms, economic priorities and inclusive decision-making within government.
President Ruto has in the past expressed openness to working with ODM, describing the party as a key player in Kenya’s political landscape. His allies have also hinted that broader cooperation could help stabilise the political environment and advance national development goals.
However, internal debate continues within ODM, with some members urging caution to ensure the party does not lose its independence. As consultations intensify, the outcome of the proposed negotiations is expected to shape political alliances and strategies in the run-up to the next election cycle.
