Crystal Asige, a former member of the Sauti Soul group, has been nominated to the senate by the Orange Democratic Movement party.

In a gazette notice by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission on Wednesday, the ‘Extravaganza’ hit star was listed as a nominee in the persons with disability category.

Crystal Asige is a talented artist, songwriter, and advocate for persons with disabilities. She lost her eyesight after complications caused by a condition known as glaucoma.

In one of her famous quotes, she says “The golden rule is to treat people how you would like to be treated but for me, the platinum rule is to treat people how they want to be treated, not how you think that they should be treated.”

From losing eyesight, and topping the UK Music chart to being nominated by Orange Democratic Party for the senate seat, Asige is a true explanation of “disability is not inability” Crystal came to fame as the first lady on the premium label, sol Generation.

The ’Ninajijua’ hitmaker, who hails from Mombasa County, was diagnosed with glaucoma, a condition which led to her losing her sight in her early 20s.

Her nomination comes two years after she parted ways with Sauti Sol’s talent mentorship project – Sol Generation in February 2020.

The visually impaired artist has been vocal about the challenges of persons with disabilities and expresses her artistic life through her music. “At the end of the day, I am OK with the things that I can’t do because there’s so much that I can do. You just have to be creative, and that goes for anyone in any situation, really. I have glaucoma, but glaucoma doesn’t have me,” she says.
