Nyeri National Polytechnic has been closed indefinitely following violent student protests that broke out on May 22, 2026, disrupting academic activities and forcing an emergency shutdown of the institution.

The decision was announced after hours of escalating tension on campus, with the administration citing safety concerns for both students and staff as the primary reason for the closure.

The unrest was reportedly triggered by disputes over student leadership elections, which a section of students claimed were mismanaged and lacked transparency, leading to growing dissatisfaction within the student body.

Students also raised concerns over increased school fees and alleged additional charges, which they said had placed a heavy financial burden on learners already struggling with rising costs of education.

The protests quickly intensified as large groups of students took to the streets within and around the campus, chanting slogans and demanding immediate intervention from the school administration.

Demonstrators blocked key access routes using stones and debris, effectively paralysing movement in and out of the institution and disrupting normal operations.

Security officers were deployed to restore order after the situation escalated beyond the control of campus authorities, with police moving in to contain the unrest.

Clashes ensued between students and law enforcement officers, with police reportedly using tear gas to disperse crowds that had become increasingly confrontational.

The confrontation spilled into surrounding areas, causing disruption in nearby roads as residents witnessed heavy police presence and heightened tension around the institution.

Eyewitnesses reported that students repeatedly regrouped despite dispersal attempts, prolonging the standoff for several hours.

Academic operations were immediately suspended as lectures, examinations, and administrative services were brought to a complete halt due to the ongoing unrest.

The institution’s management said the closure was necessary to prevent further destruction of property and to safeguard lives as the situation deteriorated.

Students were instructed to vacate the campus immediately, including hostels, as security teams moved in to secure the premises and restore calm.

Many students left the institution under tense conditions, with uncertainty over when normal learning activities would resume.

The administration confirmed that the closure is indefinite, meaning the institution will remain shut until further notice is issued after a full assessment of the situation.

Officials indicated that reopening would depend on the restoration of order and resolution of grievances raised by students.

Although official communication from the institution remained limited, internal confirmations indicated that the decision was made urgently in consultation with relevant authorities.

The governing council supported the move, stating it was necessary to stabilize the situation and prevent further escalation.

The incident highlights ongoing unrest in several Kenyan TVET institutions, where governance disputes, fee-related concerns, and leadership conflicts have increasingly triggered student protests.

Education stakeholders have expressed concern over the rising frequency of such disruptions and called for improved engagement between administrations and students.

Authorities have urged students to remain calm as investigations into the causes of the unrest continue and as efforts are made to resolve the underlying issues.

Further updates on the reopening date and administrative decisions are expected once the situation is fully reviewed and stability restored.
