Nyamira impeached governor Amos Nyaribo
Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has been impeached after 23 out of 31 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) present voted to remove him from office. The motion, which surpassed the required constitutional threshold, was sponsored by Majority Leader Julious Matwere. Tuesday’s vote marks the latest development in a long-running leadership crisis that has gripped the county.
The impeachment motion accused Governor Nyaribo of abuse of office, violation of the law, and irregular appointments. Among the allegations were claims that he conducted “Bunge Mashinani” sessions—informal public assembly meetings that MCAs argued are not legally recognised—and used them to endorse appointments such as that of Peris Nyaboke-Oroko as County Agriculture Minister. The motion also cited the formation of a Public Service Board appointment panel outside proper legal procedure.
Nyaribo’s administration has faced mounting scrutiny in recent months, including an active EACC investigation into an alleged irregular KSh 382 million tender awarded to Spentech Engineering Limited. Anti-corruption officers recently raided his home and county offices as part of the probe. The governor has previously denied wrongdoing, claiming the allegations were politically motivated.
This is not the first time Nyaribo has faced attempts to remove him from office. He survived an earlier impeachment effort in 2024 when 22 MCAs voted for his ouster—one vote short of the threshold. Past motions have accused him of illegal recruitment, ignoring court orders, misuse of county funds and nepotism, contributing to persistent divisions within the county assembly.
With the county assembly now approving the motion, the matter proceeds to the Senate, which will conduct a trial to determine whether Governor Nyaribo will be permanently removed from office or reinstated. The impeachment comes amid ongoing political tensions in Nyamira, where rival factions within the assembly have repeatedly clashed over leadership and procedural legitimacy.
