The National Police Service has launched a major multi-agency security operation aimed at restoring order in parts of Meru, Isiolo, Samburu and Laikipia counties following a spike in banditry and cattle rustling incidents.

NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said the operation is targeting areas that have recently experienced heightened insecurity, with authorities moving to contain escalating violence and protect affected communities.

The security intervention comes amid renewed attacks in sections of Meru County, including Buuri East, Tigania East and West, and Igembe regions, where armed groups have carried out raids, stealing livestock and leaving casualties in their wake.

In neighbouring Isiolo and Samburu counties, authorities have identified key hotspots such as Kipsing, Ngaremara, Sereolipi and parts of Samburu East, which have reportedly become transit routes and hideouts for suspected bandits.

Laikipia County has also been placed under increased surveillance, particularly in the Mukogodo Forest area, where security agencies believe criminal groups have been operating and coordinating attacks across county borders.

The multi-agency operation brings together personnel from various security units, including regular police, specialised response teams and intelligence officers, in a coordinated effort to flush out armed groups and dismantle their networks.

Officials say the operation will involve intensified patrols, intelligence-led raids and aerial surveillance to improve coverage across the vast and rugged terrain that has historically complicated security enforcement in the region.

Authorities have outlined key objectives of the crackdown, including recovery of stolen livestock, seizure of illegal firearms and the arrest and prosecution of individuals linked to banditry activities.

Residents in the affected counties have been urged to cooperate with security agencies by sharing information that could help identify suspects and prevent further attacks, with assurances of confidentiality for those who come forward.

The National Police Service has reiterated its commitment to restoring stability in the region, noting that sustained operations and community collaboration will be critical in addressing the persistent challenge of banditry and ensuring long-term security.
