North Eastern MPs, led by Eldas Member of Parliament Adan Keynan, have urged the government to immediately declare the ongoing drought a national disaster. The lawmakers say the situation in the region has reached critical levels, with communities struggling to cope as food and water shortages intensify.

Speaking during a briefing in Nairobi, Keynan said the severity of the crisis requires urgent national intervention. He warned that an estimated 2.1 million people across arid and semi-arid counties are already facing severe food insecurity, with the numbers expected to rise if no swift action is taken.

The MPs stated that livestock deaths, crop failure and diminishing water sources have pushed households to the brink. They cautioned that children, the elderly and expectant mothers are the most vulnerable, urging the government to scale up emergency relief supplies to avert further suffering.

They also appealed for enhanced coordination between national and county governments to ensure relief food, water trucking and medical support reach remote areas. According to the leaders, inadequate response mechanisms and delays in resource allocation have worsened the crisis on the ground.

The legislators further called on humanitarian agencies and development partners to step in with expanded support. They emphasised that without immediate intervention, the drought could escalate into a full-blown humanitarian emergency, warning that the lives and livelihoods of millions remain at risk.
