Newcastle United continued their strong UEFA Champions League form with a comfortable 2–0 victory over Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday night at St James’ Park.
Dan Burn opened the scoring early in the 11th minute, heading home from close range to give the hosts an ideal start. Joelinton then doubled the lead in the 49th minute after being set up by Harvey Barnes, sealing the points shortly after the restart.
The Magpies dominated much of the game, controlling possession and creating the better chances, while Bilbao struggled to find a breakthrough against a well-organised Newcastle defence.
Eddie Howe’s side managed the second half efficiently, making tactical substitutions to maintain control, with youngsters like Lewis Miley and Anthony Elanga coming on to add energy.
The result strengthens Newcastle’s position in their Champions League league phase, keeping their hopes of qualification for the knockout stage firmly on track.
