Nationwide Cholera Vaccination Campaign Set to Commence
The government is gearing up to launch a nationwide Cholera vaccination campaign, with a particular focus on children. The initiative, beginning on August 3, will involve administering oral vaccinations nationwide. The aim is to safeguard children from this waterborne disease, especially in anticipation of potential Cholera outbreaks during the upcoming El Niño rains, expected to start in September.
Public Health Principal Secretary, Mary Muthoni, emphasized the importance of protecting children from Cholera and other waterborne diseases that may spread during the rainy season, mainly through floods. The urgency of the vaccination drive stems from recent Cholera outbreaks in various counties.
In addition to the vaccination campaign, Muthoni encouraged residents to maintain a high standard of hygiene, such as washing their hands frequently, drinking boiled and clean water, and consuming thoroughly cooked food.
Muthoni also addressed the issue of Tuberculosis (TB) spread among children aged 1 to 15 years, revealing that 11 percent of TB cases in the country affect this age group. She stressed the need for more efforts to control the spread of the disease and urged parents not to overlook signs of TB, mistaking it for the common flu. Instead, she urged them to promptly take their children to hospitals for early testing to prevent further disease transmission.
