Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni has issued a stern warning to hospitals in the country, stating that facilities at Level 2, Level 3, and sub-county facilities are prohibited from charging for outpatient services.
Speaking on Sunday, Muthoni said this directive comes directly from President William Ruto. She emphasized that hospitals must comply and not turn away patients.
According to Muthoni, the Ministry of Health will be vigilant in enforcing the new policy, and any healthcare professionals who defy the directive risk having their licenses revoked.
The PS clarified that any Kenyan registered with the new Social Health Insurance Act (SHA) should not be charged a single cent for outpatient services at these specific hospitals. Patients will only be expected to pay when they are referred to Level 4 and Level 5 hospitals.
Muthoni encouraged more Kenyans to register with SHA, stating that the government has implemented several reforms to improve the country's healthcare sector.
