Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, greeting other leaders

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir has urged his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) colleagues to consider formalising a pre-election coalition with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2027 General Election. Nassir, who is also an ODM deputy party leader, said early coalition planning would help the party make strategic decisions and safeguard its political interests.

In his remarks, Nassir argued that politics requires pragmatism and honesty, noting that parties must realistically assess the political environment rather than rely on traditional alliances. He said initiating talks early would allow ODM to negotiate from a position of strength and avoid last-minute arrangements that could weaken the party.

The governor stressed that any political partnership should be based on mutual respect and tolerance. He cautioned against alliances with groups or leaders he said have previously shown contempt or discriminatory attitudes, adding that such partnerships risk alienating supporters and undermining national cohesion.

Nassir’s comments have added to an ongoing debate within ODM over its future political direction, particularly following recent cooperation between ODM and the ruling coalition in Parliament. However, senior ODM leaders have maintained that no formal decision has been made regarding a coalition with UDA ahead of 2027.

Political analysts say Nassir’s proposal reflects shifting political calculations as parties begin positioning themselves early for the next election cycle. They note that while a pre-election coalition could reshape Kenya’s political landscape, it is likely to face resistance within ODM, where opinions remain divided on working closely with UDA.
