Police rearrest on run remandees in Nakuru
Court proceedings at the Nakuru Law Courts were temporarily suspended on Thursday morning after four remandees escaped from custody in a dramatic incident that sparked panic within the court premises. The suspects, who were facing robbery with violence charges, reportedly overpowered security officers as they were being escorted to the courtroom.
According to witnesses, the chaos erupted around 9:00 a.m. when the suspects dashed out of the holding cells and attempted to flee the compound. Police officers immediately responded, firing warning shots to contain the situation as court users and staff scampered for safety. The commotion brought all ongoing sessions to an abrupt halt.
A joint team of police officers and members of the public managed to track down and re-arrest the fugitives moments later after a brief shootout. The suspects were subdued and taken back into custody under tight security, as investigators launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding their escape.
Nakuru County Police Commander confirmed the incident, stating that no casualties were reported during the chase. He assured the public that those responsible for the security lapse would face disciplinary action.
The judiciary has since ordered a review of security measures at the Nakuru Law Courts to prevent similar incidents in the future, as operations gradually resume following the morning disruption.
