Former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has issued a strong warning over what he termed rising intolerance, political threats, and incidents that risk undermining national cohesion and institutional respect in Kenya.
Muturi criticized recent remarks by senior government officials, warning that statements made from public platforms must be carefully considered to avoid fueling hostility. He said leaders should avoid rhetoric that could be interpreted as threats or intimidation.
He singled out remarks attributed to a Cabinet Secretary overseeing national security matters, cautioning that such statements could escalate tensions and create fear among citizens. Muturi argued that leadership language must promote stability rather than division.
Muturi also expressed concern over incidents involving disruption of church activities, saying sacred spaces should not be subjected to political interference or enforcement actions that appear provocative or disrespectful.
In his remarks, he warned that targeting or disrupting worship environments risks what he described as desecration of places of worship, urging authorities to ensure religious freedom is protected at all times.
Muturi emphasized the need for national reflection, stating that the country requires more collective prayer and moral grounding amid rising political tensions and public anxiety.
He cautioned leaders against being “drunk with power,” warning that authority can distort judgment if not exercised with humility and restraint. He said public office is temporary and requires accountability in speech and conduct.
Muturi also raised alarm over alleged threats facing journalists and media practitioners, saying intimidation of the press undermines democratic freedoms and weakens public accountability.
He cited concerns over reported incidents involving journalists and editors, warning that any attempts to silence media voices could push the country toward a dangerous democratic trajectory.
Muturi referenced discussions with other leaders on the need for a “father figure” type leadership approach, emphasizing empathy and unity in addressing national challenges.
He recalled past engagements with security leadership during national crises, noting that timely intervention had previously helped resolve sensitive cases involving citizens in distress.
Muturi stressed that Kenya must prioritize peaceful coexistence, warning against rising polarization and urging leaders to consider the emotional and social impact of their actions on citizens.
He criticized instances where national tragedies coincided with official events perceived as insensitive, arguing that leadership should prioritize empathy during periods of public mourning.
Muturi concluded by urging leaders across all arms of government to exercise restraint, protect freedoms of worship and expression, and avoid actions that could deepen divisions or weaken national unity.
