A Form Four student has died after shooting himself with his father's service pistol in an incident that has shocked residents of Karairo village in Kabondo Kasipul Constituency, Homa Bay County.

The 17-year-old, who was the son of a police officer attached to Meru County, reportedly died on Monday following a disagreement at home after his mother confiscated a mobile phone she believed was affecting his academic performance. Preliminary police investigations indicate the incident occurred shortly after the phone was taken away. Reports indicate the student had recently posted declining examination results, prompting his mother to intervene.

According to Rachuonyo North Sub-County Police Commander Peter Walah, the student's mother had visited his school earlier and learnt that his grades had dropped. She subsequently confiscated the phone in an effort to help him concentrate on his studies.

Police said the teenager allegedly waited until his father had gone to take a bath before accessing the officer's service pistol. He is reported to have left the family home with the firearm without being noticed.

Investigators say the student then made his way to the nearby Mawego institution, where he entered the compound before the fatal shooting occurred. Officers responding to the scene recovered the firearm and began processing the area as part of the investigation.

The student's body was later removed and taken to the Rachuonyo South Sub-County Hospital mortuary in Oyugis, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Commander Walah said detectives are continuing with investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the teenager accessed the firearm and whether there were additional factors that may have contributed to the tragedy.

The incident has also renewed concerns over the secure storage of firearms in the homes of licensed firearm holders and members of the disciplined services. Kenyan police officers are required to ensure government-issued firearms are securely stored to prevent unauthorized access.

Mental health experts have repeatedly called for increased emotional support for adolescents, noting that academic pressure, family conflicts and emotional distress can significantly affect young people if left unaddressed. They encourage parents, teachers and guardians to maintain open communication and seek professional counselling when warning signs of distress emerge.

Police have urged members of the public to avoid speculation as investigations continue and have appealed to families to remain attentive to the emotional wellbeing of children and teenagers while promoting safe firearm handling and storage practices.
