The Linda Mwananchi faction has cancelled a series of political rallies that had been planned for Kisii and Keroka between June 26 and July 3, saying the decision was taken to stand in solidarity with victims of the 2024 Gen Z protests and support planned anniversary commemorations.
The announcement was made on Tuesday as leaders associated with the formation said the period should be dedicated to remembrance and reflection rather than political mobilisation. The faction indicated that suspending the rallies would allow supporters and leaders to participate in activities marking the anniversary of the youth-led demonstrations.
According to the group, the move is intended to honour individuals who were affected during last year’s protests, which began as opposition to the Finance Bill before expanding into wider calls for governance reforms, accountability and economic change.
The anniversary events are expected to attract participation from different civic groups, political actors and youth movements seeking to commemorate the demonstrations that drew nationwide attention in June 2024.
Leaders allied to the faction said the cancellation should not be interpreted as a withdrawal from their political agenda but rather as recognition of the significance of the anniversary period and the concerns raised by young people during the protests.
The decision also reflects the growing influence of Gen Z-led civic engagement in Kenya’s political environment, with different organisations increasingly aligning their messaging with themes of accountability, governance and citizen participation.
Political observers note that activities around the anniversary have become a focal point for public debate, with attention shifting from traditional campaign events to conversations around rights, public participation and institutional reforms.
The Linda Mwananchi faction further called for peaceful commemorative activities and urged authorities to safeguard constitutional freedoms during public gatherings planned across the country.
No alternative dates for the postponed Kisii and Keroka rallies were announced, although the faction indicated fresh schedules would be communicated after the anniversary events conclude.
