Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has held a strategic meeting with the management of the Kenya Coast Guard Service, led by Director General Bruno Shosio, as the government moves to strengthen security across Kenya’s waterways. The meeting focused on assessing operational readiness and aligning security priorities, with Lake Victoria emerging as a key area of concern.
Murkomen emphasized the strategic importance of inland waters to national security and the economy, noting that increased criminal activity, including smuggling and illegal cross-border trade, has posed growing challenges. He said the government is committed to ensuring that waterways remain safe for trade, transport, and local livelihoods.
During the engagement, the Cabinet Secretary outlined plans to reinforce the Coast Guard through the deployment of additional officers and enhanced logistical support. The move is aimed at boosting patrols, improving surveillance, and ensuring quicker response to security threats on the lake and other inland waters.
The meeting also reviewed ongoing infrastructure improvements, including the rehabilitation of Coast Guard stations and patrol boats. Officials said the upgrades will significantly enhance operational efficiency and allow officers to cover wider areas more effectively.
Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o and Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli were among senior officials present, underscoring intergovernmental and inter-agency cooperation in addressing security challenges. Leaders highlighted the need for closer coordination between national and county governments.
Murkomen further stressed the importance of community engagement, particularly with beach management units and local leaders, to support intelligence sharing and enforcement. He said sustained collaboration between security agencies and communities will be critical in achieving long-term safety and stability along Kenya’s waterways.
