Mulamwah Accuses Safaricom of Aiding Thieves After Sim Swap

Kenyan comedian Mulamwah is currently in China and has issued a scathing warning after his phone number was taken over in what he describes as a fraudulent "inside job." The incident, which started with a WhatsApp hack, has now escalated, with the comedian publicly accusing Safaricom of incompetence and even complicity.
In a furious post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Mulamwah claimed that his number had been "fully replaced," allowing a scammer to access his WhatsApp and potentially his M-Pesa account.
"This has to stop, these are inside job games!!" he wrote. "Is our money really safe in Mpesa!! ... as we speak, someone is using my number, fully replaced... Nyinyi ndio wezi ama mnasaidia wezi kuiba?" (Are you thieves or are you helping to steal ?)
Mulamwah expressed extreme frustration, stating that he requested his number to be blocked but received no help from customer service, who he says "takes ages and does not do anything at all."
The comedian is currently in China with other content creators, including Betty Kyalo and Terence Creative, for a cultural showcase in collaboration with the Chinese Embassy in Kenya. The fact that he is out of the country has made it even more challenging for him to obtain the necessary assistance from local service providers.
He has urged friends, co-workers, and fans not to send any money to anyone requesting it from his number. "If they ask for cash, tell them to send a voice note or video call—don't get scammed," he advised. The incident raises serious concerns about the security of mobile phone numbers and personal funds for anyone in Kenya.
