Migori County faces a significant challenge in the fight against HIV and AIDS, reporting an estimated 99,510 people living with the virus as of 2024, positioning it as the fourth highest county nationally for positive individuals.
According to Migori County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health, Caleb Opondi, the county also recorded 1,572 new HIV infections in 2024, making it the second most affected county in terms of annual new cases, trailing only Nairobi.
Speaking during the World AIDS Day commemoration at Masara Primary School in Suna West Sub-County, Opondi also revealed a grim statistic: the county lost 1,041 persons to HIV-related illnesses in 2024.
However, the CECM offered a positive note, disclosing that 77,114 individuals living positively are currently on life-saving medication, indicating the effectiveness of ongoing advocacy and sensitisation efforts.
Opondi affirmed the county’s commitment to curbing new infections through various strategies, executed with the help of partners and coordination from national government health agencies.
He stressed the importance of continued partnership with the education sector, focusing on advocacy, sensitisation, and civic education to inform young people, who are severely affected by the new wave of infections, about the dangers of HIV/AIDS.
