President William Ruto has announced a series of major infrastructure and economic projects across the Nyanza region, committing billions of shillings to boost the blue economy, housing, and regional connectivity.
During a four-day working tour covering Migori, Homa Bay, Kisumu and Siaya counties, the Head of State presided over the groundbreaking and launch of key projects aimed at transforming livelihoods around Lake Victoria.
In Siaya County, Ruto broke ground for the construction of the KSh1 billion Usenge Pier in Bondo Constituency, describing it as a strategic investment to expand maritime infrastructure and unlock opportunities in fishing, transport and regional trade.
The Usenge Pier project, to be implemented by Kenya Shipyards Limited, is expected to enhance water transport between Kisumu and Homa Bay while promoting sustainable use of Lake Victoria resources.
The President said the government is investing a total of KSh9.5 billion in blue economy activities along Lake Victoria, including the construction of 10 fish landing sites stretching from Busia to Migori County.
Additional interventions include the establishment of a fishermen rescue centre in Siaya at a cost of KSh250 million, procurement of rescue boats worth KSh70 million, and investment in fish cages valued at KSh70 million to boost aquaculture productivity.
In Migori County, Ruto launched the KSh1.2 billion Sori Affordable Housing Project in Nyatike Constituency, which will deliver 748 housing units and is projected to create over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs.
He also committed KSh200 million for the construction of a modern market in Sori town to stimulate trade and support small-scale businesses within the region.
The President further revealed that a private investor has been secured to establish a rice milling plant in Nyatike, aimed at adding value to local agricultural produce and improving farmers’ incomes.
Plans are also underway to construct additional piers and modern fish landing sites around Sori and other parts of Lake Victoria to revitalise fishing activities and strengthen the local economy.
Ruto concluded his tour with an inspection of the ongoing expansion of Lichota Airstrip in Suna West Constituency, a KSh280 million project expected to enhance regional connectivity and link the area to neighbouring Tanzania and key tourism destinations.
He noted that the upgraded airstrip will play a critical role in boosting tourism to the Maasai Mara National Reserve and opening up the region for investment.
The President was accompanied by a host of national and local leaders, including Cabinet Secretaries, Members of Parliament and county officials drawn from the Nyanza region, who reiterated support for the government’s development agenda.
Addressing the ongoing controversy surrounding former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju, Ruto urged law enforcement agencies to handle the matter professionally and allow due process to take its course without political interference.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering on its promises, stating that the projects launched and inspected during the tour are part of a broader strategy to create jobs, improve infrastructure and uplift the living standards of residents across the region.
