The United States has committed Sh1.9 billion to bolster Kenya's preparedness and response against Ebola, reinforcing the country's disease surveillance systems, laboratory capacity, emergency response mechanisms and public health workforce. The funding comes as East Africa remains on high alert following the resurgence of Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo, raising concerns over the risk of cross-border transmission.

The support will be channelled towards strengthening Kenya's ability to prevent, detect and respond rapidly to Ebola outbreaks through improved surveillance, laboratory testing, emergency operations and healthcare worker training. The initiative forms part of the long-standing health partnership between Kenya and the United States aimed at enhancing national and regional health security.

Kenya has been identified as a strategic country in regional disease surveillance due to its position as a major transport and trade hub linking East and Central Africa. Health authorities have intensified preparedness measures to reduce the risk of imported Ebola cases through airports, border crossings and other points of entry.

The programme targets 22 counties considered to be at high risk of Ebola transmission, where investments will focus on strengthening surveillance networks, improving outbreak detection systems and enhancing emergency preparedness at both county and national levels.

A key component of the initiative is the expansion of Kenya's laboratory capacity. More than 800 laboratory professionals have already received specialised training in biosafety, biosecurity and diagnostic testing for Ebola and other viral haemorrhagic fevers, improving the country's ability to confirm suspected cases quickly.

The United States has also supported the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the National Virology Reference Laboratory to enhance diagnostic capabilities. In addition, mobile laboratories have been deployed to high-risk regions to provide rapid testing services closer to communities where suspected cases may emerge.

The investment further strengthens Kenya's public health workforce through the Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme, which has trained more than 1,700 disease detectives. These epidemiologists are responsible for investigating outbreaks, tracing contacts, analysing disease patterns and supporting rapid response efforts across the country.

To improve emergency coordination, the programme has trained national and county rapid response teams capable of responding immediately to disease outbreaks. The initiative has also strengthened infection prevention and control measures in health facilities to reduce the risk of transmission among healthcare workers and patients.

Emergency Operations Centres established at both national and county levels have been upgraded to improve coordination during public health emergencies. These centres support surveillance, data analysis, resource mobilisation and communication between health authorities during outbreaks.

Health officials say the investment will also enhance risk communication by improving community awareness on Ebola symptoms, prevention measures and the importance of early reporting of suspected infections. Public education remains a critical component in preventing widespread transmission.

The funding is expected to reinforce screening and surveillance at Kenya's international airports, seaports and land border crossings, particularly those serving travellers from countries experiencing Ebola outbreaks. Health authorities continue to maintain heightened vigilance at these entry points.
